Antoine Watteau: Life, facts, curiosities and art!

The French painter Antoine Watteau was born on 10. 10. 1684 in Valenciennes. The pioneer of the French painting in 18th century developed an easy style that transformed the Baroque pathos into delicate elegance. The bright delicate colours in his paintings blur to a shimmery tone that determines the character of the composition. Besides genre paintings, theatre scenes and portraits; Watteau also developed a new type of painting called as “Gallant festivals”. He painted the court society of his times incorporating erotic and mythological motifs in this type of painting. Watteau died on 18. 7. 1721 in Nogent-sur-Marne.
