Childe Hassam: Life, facts, curiosities and art!

The American painter Childe Hassam was born on 17th October 1859 in Dorchester, Massachusetts and became one of the leading representatives of American Impressionism besides Marry Cassatt and he was the cofounder of the artist group “Ten American Painters”. His street scenes and genre paintings became famous as also his series of paintings with flag-motifs, using which Childe Hassam advertised USA’s entry in the First World War. In his younger days Childe Hassam painted expressive landscape paintings in naturalistic style. Though Childe Hassam did not completed the schooling, he obtained a job as a freelance illustrator for reputed magazines like Century Magazine and Harper's. In 1882 Childe Hassam sold his first paintings in a painting exhibition. Childe Hassam used the revenues from the sold paintings for a Europe trip, where he saw the paintings and water colour art of William Turner. Hassam also studied the paintings of French Impressionists in his trip to Paris. In 1887 Childe Hassam displayed his paintings for the first time in a Parisian Salon and participated in the world exhibition in 1889. When he returned to America, Childe Hassam started the artists association “Ten American Painters” together with John Henry Twachtman and Julian Alden Weir; they were known as “The Ten”. In 1919 Childe Hassam shifted to Long Island, New York with his wife where he lived and worked till 1935.
