Edgar Germain Hilaire Degas: Life, facts, curiosities and art!

Edgar Degas, also known as Hilaire Germain Edgar de Gas was born on 19.07.1834 in Paris and died on 27.09.1917 in his native town. Edgar Degas was a French painter and sculptor who was always considered as an Impressionist; he often held exhibitions together with the other Impressionists. However, his paintings differ from the other paintings of Impressionism in certain aspects such as his accurate line perceptions and clear picture compositions. Contrary to the other Impressionists, Edgar Degas preferred to work in his studio and not in the open. His style of working was the same as that of his admirer, Toulouse Lautrec. In the beginning, Edgar Degas painted historic paintings and portraits. Later, somewhere around 1870, he explored the world of sport and theatre and started to paint his famous ballet scenes and horse races. He lost his vision towards the end of his life as a result of war injury. Degas could not paint anymore and started creating sculptures. The paintings of Edgar Degas often express a certain spontaneity and ease that emerge from the graceful body language that is a major feature of his paintings. Edgar Degas is famous for his painting compositions, in which people appear at the sides of the painting rather than its centre.
