Eugène Ferdinand Victor Delacroix: Life, facts, curiosities and art!

Ferdinand Victor Eugène Delacroix was born on 26th April 1798 in St.-Maurice-Charenton in Paris as the son of a diplomat and to a German mother. Delacroix is considered as the most famous French representative of Realism today. Delacroix began his painting education in the Parisian studio of Pierre Narcissi Guérin and he later visited the École des Beaux-Arts. Delacroix was strongly influenced by the works of Goyas, Rubens and Veroneses and he was inspired by his acquaintance with Géricault. Delacroix mainly worked on prevalent and historic events in his paintings. As a member of French envoy, Delacroix visited the East in 1832. He was strongly influenced by this visit and this influence is evident in many of his paintings. Here artistic representations do not have mere documentary value with respect to the "image" of the East; but they also project individual wishes, desires and prejudices about the East. Delacroix died in 1863 in Paris.
