Félix Vallotton: Life, facts, curiosities and art!The Swiss artist Félix Vallotton was born in 1865 as the son of a chemist in Lausanne and he grew up in poor conditions. Félix Vallotton went to Paris at the age of 17 to study art at the Open Academy Julian. In this academy Félix Vallotton got acquainted with representatives of Symbolism and with the artists group Nabis; Edouard Vuillard and Pierre Bonnard were also members of this group. In 1897, Félix Vallotton started working for the magazine Cris de Paris, for which he frequently illustrated cover pages. He achieved the much required financially stability after his marriage with the sister of the gallery owner Gabrielle Rodrigues-Henriques in 1899 as a freelance painter. One year later, Félix Vallotton displayed his paintings in an exhibition of Berliner Secession. In 1903, Félix Vallotton displayed some more paintings in an exhibition of the Vienna Secession, which were praised by Ferdinand Hodler and Gustav Klimt. Félix Vallotton´s work is diverse and comprises of more than 200 woodcuts and drawings, more than 1700 paintings, sculptures, three novels, several plays and a series of essays. Till his death in 1925 Félix Vallotton lived as one most important representatives of Symbolism and Art Nouveau; however; he inspired several subsequent styles and artist groups like “die Brücke”, Surrealisms, Pittura Metafisica or even Pop-Art. Vallotton illustrated cool eroticism and plasticity in many of his paintings and nude portraits, which anticipated the style of “New objectivity”.
