Francisco de Goya y Lucientes: Life, facts, curiosities and art!

The Spanish painter and graphic artist Francisco de Goya y Lucientes was born on 30. 3. 1746 in Fuendetodos, Aragón. He learned the technique of Fresco painting during his apprentice in Italy. Goya then became the preferred portrait painter of the Spanish palaces and nobles. He became member; and subsequently the Director of the Royal Academy and in 1786 he became the court painter. In 1792 he suffered from a serious illness that made him deaf. At the age of 63, Francisco de Goya left the Spanish court permanently and relinquished his responsibility as court painter. He moved to a country house outside Madrid. During the years 1820 to 1823, he painted epochal “pinturas negras” (black paintings), which are preserved in Prado today. They depict subjective visions of doom in a dark, cold word, symbols of a wounded, corrupt humanity without any morals and God. Goya died on 16. 4. 1828 in Bordeaux.
