Henri Rousseau: Life, facts, curiosities and art!

The French painter Henri Rousseau was born on 21. 5. 1844 in Laval. Rousseau, who is frequently called as the “grandfather of Naive art and Surrealism”, was working as a tax collector till 1885 and he began to paint as autodidact only at the age of 40. In 1893 Henri Rousseau took voluntary retirement at the age of 49 whereby he received a small pension and decided to pursue his dream of becoming an artist. Rousseau drew the attention of avant-garde artists with his naive art depicting wild animals like, tigers, monkeys or buffalos. In 1908, several artists under the leadership of Picasso organized a banquet in the honour of Henri Rousseau. Many famous artists participated in this event – Apollinaire, Robert Delaunay and Wilhelm Uhde were also present. Picasso genuinely appreciated Henri Rousseau. Rousseau died on 2. 9. 1910 in Paris.
