Katsushika Hokusai: Life, facts, curiosities and art!

“From the age of five I was obsessed with sketching things. At the age of 50, I made a series of graphics, but it was only at the age of 70 that I produced something worth looking at. At the age of 100, I will be really good and at 110, I would have reached the stage where every dot and every stroke I paint will be alive”. Katsushika Hokusai was a prodigy. He changed his name to Gakyo-rojin and called himself by this name from 1834 to 1849; it means an old man who is mad about art. He created more than 30,000 woodblock prints in his lifetime. His series 36 views of Fuji are his most popular works. The sheet “The big wave” is considered as the most popular Japanese woodblock print.
