Max Liebermann: Life, facts, curiosities and art!

The German painter and graphic artist Max Liebermann was born on 20th July 1847. His father was a wealthy Jewish businessman and came from Prussian middle class. After 5 years of training at the Art Academy in Weimar, Max Liebermann moved to Paris for some time, where he became the first painter to exhibit his paintings after the German-French war and engaged himself with the paintings of French impressionists. His paintings showed powerful colors and paste- like color application from 1880 onwards, which became characteristic for his work. Max Liebermann became the President of the “Berlin Secession” in his hometown Berlin. This association opposed the old-fashioned imperial policies, which rarely allowed new art streams to develop. Under his 12 years of leadership, Berlin Secession acquired a superior position in the German cultural areas. In 1933 Max Liebermann was nominated as the Honorary President of the Prussian academy of arts after which he withdrew from art politics as a result of national socialist influence. He spent the last two years of his life in isolation in his hometown Berlin. The paintings of Max Liebermann represent the transition of art from 19th century to Classic Modern.  Max Liebermann is considered as a well known representative of German Impressionism.
