Michelangelo: Life, facts, curiosities and art!

Michelangelo was born in Caprese near Arezzo. Michelangelo participated in a painting workshop at the tender age of 13. He turned to sculpture later. Michelangelo shuttled between Florence and Rome for many years of his life. During this period he created few of his most important works that were commissioned by the Pope. In 1546 Michelangelo was appointed as the architect of the St. Peter’s church; he created a model for the dome in 1557. In 1536 Michelangelo was assigned to paint a fresco of “The Last Judgement” on the altar wall of Sistine Chapel. He selected a mass scene and depicted Jesus as a massive, muscular figure standing amongst saints and the blessed ones. The depiction of holy Bartholomew with flayed skin is a self -portrait. After the completion of the fresco, he faced criticism due to the naked forms. In 1564 Daniele da Volterra was assigned to paint clothes on the naked figures. Michelangelo died in Rome in the same year.
