Caravaggio: Life, facts, curiosities and art!
The Italian painter Michelangelo Merisi Caravaggio was born on 29th September 1571 in Milan and he is regarded as the founder of Roman Baroque painting as well as one of the most fascinating artists of 16th and 17th century. His eccentric and tragic life story is reflected in his paintings and sketches. Caravaggio was one of the painters who painted their observations in detail. Caravaggio frequently portrayed thieves and prostitutes in his paintings– even while depicting biblical scenes. People were shocked to see his paintings. The most famous example is the ‘Madonna of the rosary’ in which the dirty feet are visible. Caravaggio was vilified as “the painter of dirty feet” by many of his critics. Just before the turn of century, Caravaggio developed the style of light-dark painting, which made him famous and greatly influenced the Dutch painting. Especially the sketches and paintings of Peter Paul Rubens, Jan Vermeer and Rembrandt carry these influences. Caravaggio was often involved in disputes and court procedures due to his controversial art. This even culminated in a murder as a result of which Caravaggio had to flee Rome. Caravaggio moved to Malta in 1608, where he was honoured as celebrated artist and made the Knight of the Order of Malta. When Caravaggio insulted another Knight of the Order, he had to flee again. He wanted to return to Rome in 1610 to request for pardon but died on the way from malaria.
