Paul Gauguin was born on 7th June 1848 in Paris. Being punctual and diligent, he made rapid progress, married a beautiful Danish lady in 1873 and lived a carefree life for several years. He collected paintings of Impressionists and began to paint himself in 1875. After his first exhibition, Gauguin gave up his profession, separated from his wife and followed van Gogh to Arles. He left van Gogh following a big quarrel when he was arrested under the suspicion of murder. The profits collected from the auction of his paintings in 1891 provided him the opportunity to pursue his dream of living a paradisiacal life in the South sea. He was tired of civilization and found peace as a painter in Mataiea on Tahiti. The creative phase of Gauguin in which he painted several immortal paintings, did not last long. He ran out of money, fell ill and returned to Paris. He could make his second and last trip to Polynesia on inherited money. He returned to Tahiti in 1895 then he went to Dominica. There he made new paintings that were full of colour and exotic magic. Paul Gauguin died on 8th May 1903 in Dominica after suffering from physical and mental illness.
