Paula Modersohn-Becker: Life, facts, curiosities and art!

Paula Modersohn-Becker was born on 8th February 1876.  In 1878 her family shifted to Bremen and she visited drawing schools in Bremen and London at the age of 16. In the summer of 1897 she visited Worpswede and came into contact with the famous painter Fritz Mackensen. She took lessons from him in portrait and nude painting. Some of her most expressive sketches and paintings are made during this period. During her stay in Paris she got the opportunity to study sketches and paintings of Vincent van Gogh, Paul Cézanne and Paul Gauguin.  She was greatly influenced by their work. She married  the painter Otto Modersohn in 1901 and gave birth to twin daughters in year 1907.  Paula Modersohn-Becker died in the same month at the age of 31 due to sudden blocking of the artery. The paintings of Paula Modersohn Becker were displayed in an exhibition in Bremen art gallery in year 1913 only after her death. The German painter Paula Modersohn Becker, who sold only five paintings when she was alive, is regarded as one of the most important artists of 20th century today and she paved the path for German Expressionism and Cubism.
