Rembrandt Harmensz van Rijn was born in 1606 in Leiden and he is considered as one of the most important Dutch painters of the 17th century today. In 1621 Rembrandt completed his painting studies and became independent in 1625. He became popular in a short time with his mythological historical paintings and through individual-, group-, and self portraits. Besides painting, Rembrandt was also interested in etching and drawing. The app. 80 self portraits painted by him are a speciality; these depict maturity and ageing. He was specially skilled in the application of light and shadows and could thus create strong contrasts that endowed liveliness and drama to his paintings.
