Vincent Willem van Gogh: Life, facts, curiosities and art!

The Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh was born on 30. 3. 1853 in Groot-Zundert, North Brabant. He was unsuccessful in the professions he chose initially (substitute teacher, curator, bookseller and theologian). At the age of 27, he decided to pursue art for a livelihood as an autodictat. Vincent studied in the gallery Cormon and he got acquainted with the art dealer Theodore through his brother as also the Impressionists including Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Alfred Sisley, Georges Seurat, Edgar Degas, Paul Signac and Camille Pissaro. In February 1988 he relocated to Arles, where he tried to establish an artists’ colony together with Paul Gauguin. In December 1888 there was a scandal: After a fight with Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh cut off the lower part of his own left ear under the influence of absinthe and presented it as a gift to a prostitute in a brothel. He suffered from a psychological breakdown after Gauguin went away. In 1889 van Gogh was brought to the asylum in St.-Rémy. Here he painted his last works that displayed an extraordinary intensity of expression. Vincent van Gogh committed suicide on 29. 7. 1890 in Auvers-sur-Oise. van Gogh hardly enjoyed any success in his lifetime. However the claim that he had sold only one painting throughout his life has been disproved.
