Joseph Mallord William Turner: Life, facts, curiosities and art!

The painter Joseph Mallord William Turner was born on 23.4.1775 in London and he was the most influential figure of romantic and landscape paintings besides Caspar David Friedrich. He is considered as the biggest English artist today. He created distinctive works in spite of his fast style of working. Ships and water were the main source of his inspiration and he was also fascinated by dramatic scenes in nature. He died at the age of 76 and left behind a legacy of more than 20000 works. William Turner discovered “Mood landscape” and created a style in Landscape painting that was more than mere object representation; he depicted the impression created by the objects under specific light conditions. Therefore, William Turner is regarded as the true forerunner of the French Impressionism and he inspired many artists with his style such as e.g. Paul Signac or Claude Monet. He changed his style after his trip to Italy in the years 1819/20, during which he stayed for a long time in Rome, Naples and Venice. His paintings drifted away from Realism. This change was criticized to the extent that some of his later works were not even displayed in the Royal Academy. William Turner died in his country house on 19.12.1851 in Chelsea. The Turner prize is being awarded in his name.
