The American style of painting acquired significance only after the United States of America became the superpower following the Second World War. Painting was an important criterion for the development status of the society according to the traditional understanding of civilization. It was obvious that the first American painters who displayed their work in public at the Paris global exhibition were laughed off and ridiculed. While the Americans had only recently discovered the Landscape art, Europeans were already smitten by the Historicism. Europe was at the peak of international avant-garde; its thinking was incorrect: While the first French impressionists shifted to the forests on the outskirts of Paris to invent the art of “Plein painting” in 1920, the American painters belonging to the Hudson River School, like e.g. Frederic Edwin Church or Albert Bierstadt had already been practising it for long. The American Landscape art offered totally new and exciting motifs. While pictures and paintings a´la "die Kreidefelsen auf Rügen" or "Wanderer überm Nebelmeer" were starting to look uninspired, the depiction of the Niagara Falls or of virgin forest of the southern states offered completely new impressions of nature. In spite of all these unique characteristics, it was long before America could come out of the artistic shadows of Europe. This happened with the emergence of Abstract Expressionism and Pop art.
